Josiah Quincy Upper School
Josiah Quincy Upper School (JQUS) is located in the heart of downtown Boston’s Chinatown district serving students from a variety of backgrounds and many live in non-English speaking homes. The school is located in a low-socioeconomic area and 100% of the students receive free lunch.
Enrollment of students participating in the program is increasing and this has helped to promote better academic achievement, better behavioral expectations, and will lead to a higher number of collegiate attendees.
The school is a proud member of the International Baccalaureate program and encourages students to become active learners, well-rounded individuals, and engaged world citizens. To meet these rigorous requirements, students are exposed to and perform music from different genres, explore music’s relationship with society, attend professional performances and masterclasses, explore music’s creative process, and provide community concerts. Through hard work and dedication, students will have the opportunity to participate in state and regional band festivals and achieve scholarships for college—the ultimate goal of the International Baccalaureate program.
The band program at JQUS is one that is filled with rich tradition and prestige located in a small jewel of Boston known as Chinatown. The program is much more than providing the gift of music and college opportunities to students, it is about creating more well-rounded individuals who achieve their dreams.
Under the direction of Mr. Babecka, the JQUS band has had students participate in the Eastern Massachusetts Honor Band; New England Conservatory of Music Ensemble and Lesson Outreach Program; Community Music Center of Boston’s Summer Music Camp; Boston Chinatown Neighbor Center’s Summer Music Program; and the Berklee College of Music All-Star Ensemble and High School Mentoring Academy. In 2015, the band received the Grammy Music Foundation’s Community Band Award.
